This fire screen is available for a very limited pre-order until the end of Monday 11th Sept. Wood for the immediate crafting of these fire screens will be ordered on Tuesday morning. These pre-ordered fire screens will be shipped before the end of November.
Please be sure to read this entire description before placing a pre-order, as there are some notes about colour/appearance and shipping in the description which may affect your purchasing decision.
By purchasing this item you are making a deposit only. An additional US$450 will be due on the 1st of November. The deposit only covers the cost of the wood and is non-refundable, unless we are able to find another customer for your fire screen before the end of November. The full shipping cost is charged on this order, so you know how much it will cost - shipping cost is refundable.

This fire screen will be made from solid American Black Walnut. The top bar will have a beautiful inlay of European Beech, with a Celtic knot tree design in the centre. As the inlay will not be laser cut, there will be no burn marks on the wood - instead, it is hand fitted. As with all our products, we will build and finish the fire screen with the intention that it will become a family heirloom that will last hundreds of years.

Inlays are hand made, so some variation between each fire screen is to be expected.
I'm offering this fire screen with the option of removable feet in order to save on shipping costs. The cost of shipping with the feet installed is essentially 3 times greater than shipping the feet un-mounted. To some destinations this is not an issue, however, to the UK this makes shipping over $290.
The feet will be securely mounted using a very tight fitting and strong dovetail. The feet have been designed to be narrower than the fire screen leg to hide the join where the feet have been installed. You should not need any glue for the feet to stay in place, however, a small amount of wood glue would secure the feet for life. The foot installation is tool free and easy - instructions will be provided.
The product photos provided are from the manufacturing reference model in our computer aided design software - the colour of the Walnut is not correct. The photo of our Walnut box below will give you a much better idea of the finished colour, tone, and appearance of the Walnut we hand pick.
The insert area for your embroidery is supported by a 1/2" piece of plywood with book matched solid Walnut laminated to it with aerospace grade Epoxy- this will prevent the back of the fire screen from warping or having any structural issues.
The display area for your embroidery piece is 18" x 21" (457mm x 533mm) - sized specifically to suit The Crewel Work Company's Mellerstain Firescreen embroidery with 1" of fabric on each side of the embroidery. The Nicola Jarvis Studio Loveday Epic will also fit perfectly.
Two pieces of pre-cut 4 ply conservation grade mat board will be included with your fire screen - two pieces so they can be stacked for extra rigidity. See Mary Corbet's instructions for mounting embroidery - or you can take your piece to a quality picture framing studio (not your local craft store) or finisher who has worked with embroidery before. You can also mount your piece with framers tape if you don't wish to lace it to the matboard.
The back of the frame uses the same spring-pin method that our boxes use for mounting the insert. This method allows the frame to be built with a very small gap between the rear insert and the screen's frame, and no visible fasteners. It also allows you to access your embroidery in the future for cleaning or to change the piece on display. A screwdriver to access the pins is included with the fire screen.
The frame of the fire screen will be constructed of mortise and tenon joints, ensuring a very strong structure. A finish of Danish oil darkens and hardens the wood, whilst also protecting it from moisture. Many coats of oil based urethane are then applied to build a high-quality gloss finish that is very hard. We say many, because we keep applying coats and sanding between coats until it's done, rather than stopping at a certain number of coats and potentially not having a beautiful finish in some areas.
General dimensions of the fire screen are detailed below.
